Adult ASL Classes

Course Description:

We offer ASL courses in Parts 1-4 (equivalency of 2 full semesters of ASL 1 & 2 at other colleges). Each unit focuses on the natural acquisition of American Sign Language as a conversational language. The development of sign language skills will focus on the everyday communication practices as demonstrated by the American Deaf people. Aspects of Deaf Culture will be incorporated into class activities as appropriate to the content. This is a beginning level course with hands-on activities that practice using body language, facial expressions, and/or gestures associated with learning ASL. The classes are very fun and dynamic for any one!

Prerequisites: None.

It is recommended to complete each sequence in the series of units Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, & Part 4.

Objectives:

Student will:

1. Recognize and express spatial relationships.

2. Use appropriate facial expressions and body movements.

3. Respond to commands.

4. Learn to visualize objects.

5. Be more aware of communication functions, grammar, vocabulary, and cultural aspects of the Deaf community.

6. Introduce oneself, exchange personal information and talk about surroundings.

7. Tell where you live, talk about your family and tell about activities.

8. Learn the basic numbers 1- 100 expressed in ASL.

Learning American Sign Language: Levels I & II, Beginning & Intermediate, 2nd Edition (2004).

Cost of Classes:

The cost of the 10-week classes $150.00 ($15.00 per a class!) the purchase of one time of textbook cost approximately $70-90 dollars depending where you purchase them.
